QA Roadmap 2026: Fresher Tester Roadmap + 90-Day Manual → Automation Plan

A step-by-step software testing roadmap for 2026 — what a fresher should learn first, a week-by-week 90-day plan to switch from manual to automation, the skills each QA role needs and the projects that get you shortlisted.

Most people waste months learning testing in the wrong order — jumping into Selenium before they can write a test case, or collecting certificates without a single project. This roadmap fixes the order.

Part 1 is a fresher QA roadmap (zero to job-ready). Part 2 is a 90-day plan to move from manual to automation for working testers. Both are built from the skills that appear most often in the QA jobs we publish every day.

Part 1: Fresher QA roadmap (0 → job-ready in 4–6 months)

Stage 1 — Testing fundamentals (weeks 1–4)

  • SDLC and STLC, Agile/Scrum basics, verification vs validation.
  • Testing types: functional, regression, smoke, sanity, integration, system, UAT, exploratory.
  • Test design techniques: equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, state transition, error guessing.
  • Write test scenarios and test cases; raise bugs with severity and priority. Use our test case and bug report templates.
  • Practise on real sites (an e-commerce or banking demo app) — 50 test cases and 10 bug reports is a good target.

Stage 2 — Tools every tester uses (weeks 5–8)

  • JIRA: stories, bugs, boards, JQL basics — see JIRA & Agile interview questions.
  • SQL: SELECT, WHERE, JOINs, GROUP BY, subqueries — see SQL for testers.
  • API testing with Postman: methods, status codes, headers, auth, collections, environments, simple assertions.
  • Browser DevTools: console errors, network tab, responsive mode.
  • Basic mobile testing on your own phone: installation, interruptions, network switching.

Stage 3 — Programming + first automation (weeks 9–16)

  • Pick one language: Java (most service-company jobs) or JavaScript/TypeScript (Playwright, product companies).
  • Core concepts: variables, loops, conditions, OOP, collections, exceptions, file handling.
  • Selenium WebDriver or Playwright: locators, waits, actions, frames, windows. Start with our Selenium WebDriver tutorial.
  • TestNG/JUnit (or Playwright Test), Page Object Model, Maven/npm, Git and GitHub.

Stage 4 — Portfolio, resume and interviews (weeks 17–24)

Fresher rule of thumb: one strong project you can explain for 10 minutes beats five certificates. Interviewers ask “show me” more than “tell me”.

Part 2: 90-day manual → automation plan

For working manual testers with 1–2 hours on weekdays and 4–5 hours on weekends. The plan uses Java + Selenium because it matches the largest number of openings; swap in TypeScript + Playwright if your target companies prefer it. For a slower, more detailed path see the 6-month manual to automation plan.

WeeksFocusOutcome by the end
1–2Java basics: syntax, data types, conditions, loops, methods, arrays, StringsSolve 30 small programs (reverse string, palindrome, duplicates, max/min)
3–4OOP (classes, inheritance, polymorphism, interfaces), collections (List, Set, Map), exceptionsModel a simple “Library” or “Cart” with classes and collections
5Selenium setup, locators (id, CSS, XPath), basic actions, browser commandsAutomate login and search on a demo site
6Waits (explicit), dropdowns, alerts, frames, windows, Actions, JavaScript executorAutomate 10 real scenarios incl. a form and a table
7TestNG: annotations, assertions, groups, priorities, DataProvider, testng.xmlRun a suite with data-driven login tests and an HTML report
8Page Object Model + PageFactory, Maven project structure, config propertiesRefactor everything into a clean POM framework
9Utilities: screenshots on failure, Excel/JSON data, logging (Log4j), Extent/Allure reportsFramework with reports and failure screenshots
10Git & GitHub, Jenkins or GitHub Actions, run headless, parallel executionTests run automatically on every push
11API testing: Postman → REST Assured (GET/POST/PUT/DELETE, JSON path, auth, schema)10 API tests added to the same framework
12Polish and interview prep: README, resume, mock interviews, 60-second framework explanationGitHub link on resume; apply to 10+ automation roles a week

Weekly routine that works

  • Mon–Fri (1–2 hrs): 30 minutes theory, 60 minutes coding. Commit to GitHub every day.
  • Saturday: build the week’s feature into your framework.
  • Sunday: revise with interview questions and write a short note of what you learnt — it becomes your interview story.
  • Start automating small repetitive checks at your current job from week 6 — real work experience counts most on your resume.

Selenium or Playwright first?

If most target jobs mention Java + Selenium (common in service companies), learn that first — the concepts carry over. If you are aiming at product companies and startups, or you know JavaScript, start with Playwright. Read the full Selenium vs Playwright comparison before deciding.

Portfolio projects that get shortlisted

  1. E-commerce UI framework — login, search, cart, checkout with POM, data-driven tests, reports and CI.
  2. API test suite — CRUD tests for a public REST API with REST Assured or Playwright request, schema validation and environment config.
  3. Manual test pack — test plan, 50 test cases, RTM and 10 bug reports for one app (shows thinking, great for freshers).
  4. Mobile automation demo — Appium tests for a sample APK on an emulator (optional, strong for mobile roles).

Keep each project with a clear README: what it tests, tech stack, how to run, and a screenshot of the report.

FAQs

How long does it take to get a QA job as a fresher?

With focused study of 2–3 hours a day, most freshers become interview-ready in 4–6 months. Applying daily and building projects speeds it up.

Can a non-IT graduate become a software tester?

Yes. Testing values logical thinking and attention to detail. Start with manual testing fundamentals, SQL and API basics, then add automation.

Is 90 days really enough to move to automation?

It is enough to become productive in basic automation and clear entry-level automation interviews, if you practise consistently. Mastery comes with real project work.

Which certification should I do?

ISTQB Foundation is widely recognised in India. Pair it with practical projects; you can also take our free courses with certification.
